Henry Hardy Builders transform St Peter's Church Crypt in Hackney
St Peter's Church employs Henry Hardy Builders in a £500,000 project to convert the crypt into a state-of-the-art community space.
February 2014
One of the more exciting projects Henry Hardy has been involved with this year is the rebuilding of the crypt and other spaces in St Peter's Church in De Beauvoir, Hackney, London. Since it was opened in 1841 St Peter's has served the community as a school, a soup kitchen and a refugee centre. Working with Erect Architecture, Henry Hardy has aimed to reveal the original features of the crypt, to create a new accessible space for the local community.
The works include the construction of a new cafeteria with a state-of-the-art kitchen, new toilets and a shower area. We have also provided three councelling rooms and an art gallery in the space. A highly energy-efficient zonal heating system has been designed and installed by Henry Hardy engineering experts, and integrates with an existing system in other areas of the church.
Outside the café has been opened up to the southern courtyard, with redesigned drainage systems, and a new patio area to provide external seating.
